METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF DEVELOPING CROSS-CULTURAL COMPETENCY IN GENERAL PHYSICIANS IN POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

Relevance: The development of cross-cultural competence is of great importance in the system of postgraduate medical education, since the effective interpersonal communication of healthcare professionals, in particular general practitioners, depends largely on the level of cross-cultural competence. This problem is of the most immediate interest due to epidemics, pandemics, human-made and environmental disasters.

The paper aims to analyze the curricula intended for physicians’ cross-cultural competence development and to identify the main methodological principles for the development of this competence in postgraduate medical education.

Methods: theoretical (analysis, synthesis, generalization).

Results: we have analyzed the curricula aimed at developing doctors’ cross-cultural competence. It has been established that to develop this competence among general practitioners, it is necessary to introduce the topics to the basic courses in the system of postgraduate medical education, which will enable understanding and awareness of cultural differences in the professional environment.

Conclusions: the main methodological principles for general practitioners’ cross-cultural competence development at postgraduate education institutions involve identifying of relevant topics within the intercultural framework for their inclusion in the disciplines offered to doctors in the postgraduate education system; using such forms of education that will encourage, motivate and increase the interest in studying; ensuring on-the-job continuous training of general practitioners.
